Reflection- second numeracy lesson- second week (second part of TP)

I was happy with the idea of the lesson which is making a pattern of strawberry and marshmallow; I thought it will be easy and simple for the children to get the idea of patterns.

In the whole I think the lesson was smooth simple and the children were under my control. I also liked how I have the children putting their hands up to answer but when we moved to the centers I think the main mistake was to have two groups doing the activity at the same time because firstly, it took less time than what I planned for and secondly, half of the class was absent so I should have one group a time.

Another problem is that when the children finished the activity with me they did not sit on the corners that I asked them but they were going around and disturb the other groups. I should at that time ask the child that I was focused on to wait and control the others and separate them or move them to the yellow (warning).

Another issue, the sticks was danger for the children but I have used this idea in the past with KG class with their English teacher’s promotion. I think from this point I should take in my mind that children are different and what they are able to do is different. in general, in the next time if I’m going to do the lesson again I will provide more extra activity and I will choose the children who are playing in good way.

Last thing to mention, in the small activity some of the children were eating the food while I was working with other children. I don’t mind if they eat but the food they were eating was belong to other children who did not done the activity yet. Positive thing that I think of this before and I provide extra one’s but the negative thing is me giving instruction and not insets on them so in the next time each child will have a plate+ 3 strawberries+ 3 Marshmallows and a stick  to work with and the rest will be out of their hand reach, I will also have a stickers because they love it to put it in their hand if they put the stick on the box or basket until we finish the lesson and they are allow to eat it.

This lesson makes me more aware of how teachers should think of problems that might happen during the lesson and provide possible solutions to solve it or switch to it in the class.  As well  I learnt that the teacher must have an extra steps in the post (end) of each activity incase that the time was less than what she though.

However, in the last whole I prepared to ask them an open question like what patterns in our life such as night and morning, three meals or five times of pray and so on but because they were so hyper active I forget to mention it. So I need to focus more in my closing time and by that I mean review what we have learnt, give open ended questions ect.

  1. Your comments are interesting and it's very interesting how you notice different things to me. I thought that you managed the class well, particularly in the first whole class part. You were clear and consistent. You need to make sure that you continue this through the rest of the lesson. You dropped your voice and you spoke to individuals more. You asked the children to raise their hands, praised them and used names. Continue to do this - more if possible. You used Arabic to support learning and you demonstrated patterns well. You used a song to begin the class and focus attention, although I'm not sure that they understood the aims. You demonstrated the activities well, but there was no need to repeat them once in small groups. In terms of areas I would like you to improve. Firstly, remember you need to manage the whole class, you spent all the time with your main group and some children were walking about, not focusing - this is why they create a problem. For example Seif Taleb needed refocusing as he was creating problems and walking about. Try to catch him being good. Again, take notice of your question forms - you are often inaccurate, although you did correct yourself on one occasion. In terms of planning, I want to see a plan before I arrive, so I know what to expect. Also, it is useful should I need to write comments on it. Also, try to include children in demonstrations. For example, you could get students to put the boy/girl pictures on the board, or allow a child to put the strawberries on the stick. It would have been helpful to show the word 'pattern' on the board next to the examples. In general, try to be more consistently positive, praise and use names. Try to keep an eye on the whole class and don't ignore anything. You management of the transition from small groups to 2nd Whole class was better, but I think if you more of a competition between groups, encourage them to be first on the carpet even more and speak loudly so all can here you can improve it still further.

    1. I agree with the management part although I lose the control during the focus and it is because what you mentioned I have to manage the whole class while I’m doing the activity.

However, the song was because Fatima is very sensitive to new people in the classroom and she was almost crying so we sang to change her mode and let her forget for a while… glade you like it.

I think your idea of the child putting the boy/ girl pictures is better because they can see the patterns clearly it was just me aiming to have physical thing during the circle so they do not get bored quickly.

My aim for this weekend is to practice on my questions form and create my lesson plan for Sunday observation (Hup 9:30 am)

  2. Good reflection Asma.
You figure out the problems and how could you avoid them next time. I think it will be good idea if you provide other activities for these who finish early to keep them busy.
I liked you lesson it is easy and simple and linked to the aim of the lesson. I think the students enjoyed making the strawberries and marshmallows.
